  • US: The California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) has released a first draft of its rulemaking on automated decision-making technologies, paving the way for “the most comprehensive and detailed set of rules in the ‘AI space.’”
  • Europe: The EU Parliament has overwhelmingly voted to formally adopt its Data Act, which aims to support the emergence of a single European market for data.
  • Asia: South Korea’s Personal Information Protection Committee (PIPC) has announced several proposed changes to the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), including establishing data rights for people subjected to automated decisions.
  • US: The White House has issued an executive order on the safe, secure, and trustworthy development and use of AI, including the principle that Americans’ privacy and civil liberties must be protected as AI evolves.
  • EU-JP: The EU and Japan have concluded a landmark deal on cross-border data flows in a joint effort to advance societal and economic digitalization. This lays the foundation for a common approach to digital trade.
  • Global: 28 countries from around the globe have reached a “world-first agreement” with the Bletchley Declaration on AI Safety, establishing a shared understanding of the opportunities, risks, and responsibilities of frontier AI.
  • US: Delaware’s governor, John Carney, has signed the Delaware Personal Data Privacy Act— the strongest privacy bill in the US—which will go into effect on January 1, 2025.
  • US: The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has released a list of planned updates to their guidance on implementing the HIPAA Security Rule.
  • EU-US: The EU-US Data Privacy Framework has received its first legal challenge in the EU court system, an application to annul, indicating we can expect more challenges.
